SUPPORTING THEORY
A number of related ideas support studying the visual within an ecological framework.
The core cultural/physiological frame underlying the ecology is supported by several strains of thought, most significantly living-systems theory (Capra, 1996), sociobiology (Ornstein, 1991; Shoemaker, 1996;Wilson, 1992, 1998), nonverbal communication (Knapp & Hall, 1997; J. Streeck, personal communication, 1996; Wilson, 1998), cognitive studies (Barry, 1997b; Bechara et al., 1997; LeDoux, 1986; Moriarty, 1996; Sperry, 1973; Williams, 1995, 1999), mass communication (McLuhan, 1951, 1964; McLuhan & Powers, 1989), social constructionism (Berger & Luckmann, 1967), symbolic interactionism (Blumer, 1969), and art history (Foster, 1998; Stafford, 1996, 1997),
Although each theoretical approach is complex and subtly nuanced, space allows only a cursory review of a few tenets from each. They resonate an I see, therefore I amâI am, therefore, I see (Williams, 1999) perspective when applied to visual theory. The most relevant themes are summarized next.
